The 433rd time that Bitcoin was "dead"
According to the statistics of blockchain information website 99bitcoins, as of November 15, 2021, Bitcoin has been declared "dead" by opponents from all over the world for 433 times.
On December 15th, 2010, Bitcoin received its first obituary. An underground economist published an article "Why Bitcoin can't become a currency". He pointed out that the only reason why Bitcoin can survive is novelty. It will either stay fresh forever or die soon. At that time, the price of Bitcoin was only $0.23. Today, even compared with the lowest bitcoin price of $58,300 in the past week, the increase in 11 years is as much as 253,478 times. Unfortunately, the website that published this article no longer exists.
Before 2013, because Bitcoin was too small, there were only eight obituaries about it. From 2014 to 2016, because the price of Bitcoin has been fluctuating in the range of several hundred dollars, the average number of obituaries about Bitcoin has remained between 28 and 39.
In 2017, Bitcoin became a new outlet, and various funds began to flood into digital assets. Bitcoin also ushered in the second bull market in history. With the price of Bitcoin exceeding $10,000 in that year, the subjects who published obituaries on Bitcoin also changed from mainstream media such as Forbes, CNN, Washington Post and Yahoo Finance to famous people. When Bitcoin reached $11,831, alan greenspan, former chairman of the Federal Reserve, said that Bitcoin reminded him of the currency issued during the American colonial period, which turned out to be worthless. Paul krugman, the Nobel laureate in economics, also made bearish remarks when the price of bitcoin reached $17,640.
In 2017, Bitcoin received a rare 124 obituaries, 3.4 times that of the previous year. In 2018, Bitcoin alarmed Bill Gates, the former richest man in the world, and Buffett, the stock god, who went into battle in person. Buffett's "Bitcoin is the square of rat poison" and his friend Munger's "Bitcoin is a harmful poison" are still mentioned from time to time.
Although Bitcoin received more than 400 obituaries, its "anti-fragile" nature made it not only fail to recover, but play higher than before. At present, Bitcoin has already surpassed the trillion-dollar market value and ranked among the top five global assets.
How many people around the world hold Bitcoin?
According to a survey data released by the Pew Research Center, an independent research organization in the United States, on the 12th of this month, about 16% of Americans have invested, traded or used Bitcoin, and this figure jumped to 31% among people aged 18-29. At the same time, the members of the investigation team also conducted a survey on "Have you heard of Bitcoin?" The survey results showed that nearly one quarter (24%) of the respondents said they had heard a lot of information about Bitcoin and digital assets, while nearly two thirds (62%) said they had heard some information about Bitcoin or digital assets, and only about one eighth (13%) said they knew nothing about digital assets such as Bitcoin.
In contrast, in 2015, Pew Research Center also conducted a similar survey, asking the respondents whether to invest, trade or use bitcoin. At that time, the results were very different from the recent one. At that time, only about 1% of the respondents said that they had invested in Bitcoin, while as many as 48% of the respondents said that they had never heard of Bitcoin.
In addition, according to Coinbase's recently released third-quarter financial report, as of the end of September 2021, the platform had 73 million registered users, an increase of 5 million compared with the second quarter. If compared with the total population of 329 million in the United States, the proportion is about 23.7%. However, it should be noted that according to Coinbase's current terms of service, there are 100 countries or regions with open registration. Therefore, considering the economic level and population of different countries, the conclusion that 16% of Americans have invested, traded or used Bitcoin is of certain reference value. In addition, according to media reports, the population holding Bitcoin in the UK will exceed 5% by the end of 2020, which is about 3.4 million, while the number of users participating in Bitcoin investment in South Korea will reach 5.09 million in January 2018, which is two-thirds of the number of shareholders in the same period.
We can further infer the number of people participating in bitcoin investment in the world through the "innovation diffusion curve", which consists of five parts, namely "innovators (2.5%)", "early adopters (13.5%)", "early public (34%)", "late public (34%)" and "laggards (16%). According to the theory of "innovation diffusion curve", Britain has entered the stage of "early adopter", while the United States and South Korea have entered the stage of "early mass".
